*Bioinformatics, Computational Biology and analysis of NGS data*

Three 30-month research positions in the field of
Bioinformatics/Informatics, Computational Biology and NGS data analysis
areavailable at CIBIO (_http://cibio.up.pt_), University of Porto, to
start a new Research Group. All areas of computational biology and
bioinformatics will be considered. Applications from candidates with a
demonstrated record of developing and/or applying computational
approaches to study biological questions in areas including comparative
genomics and transcriptomics, evolutionary genomics, phylogenomics,
genetics/population genetics, and systems biology, and a demonstrated
interest in collaborative research, are especially encouraged to
apply.The successful candidates will contribute to several lines of
research involving next-generation sequence data analysis,
meta-genomics, population genetics, phylogenetics and phylogeography.

The positions correspond to an exciting new role that will provide
advanced and dedicated bioinformatics/informatics and computational
biology expertise to CIBIO, University of Porto. Successful candidates are
expected to deploy and maintain analytic and data management pipelines
as well as generate custom bioinformatic solutions. They will be key
members of CIBIO because they are expected to collaborate with faculty,
staff, and students in the design of genomic experiments and the analysis
of experimental data. Experience in the analysis of next-generation
sequencing data is preferred. Good communication and writing skills
are essential.

Applicants should have a PhD degree, a minimum of 3 years postdoctoral
experience, and asignificant publication record in SCI journals. We
expect to recruit at the following levels:

1. A PI for the Bioinformatics/Informatics and Computational Biology
Group. He/she will be expected to lead the Group, establish solid
collaborations, and be able to attract national and international
funding. As the candidate will be invited to participate in teaching
at the MSc and PhD levels, a history of lecturing will be considered
valuable. Salary will correspond approximately to a grossannual
income of 90.000 EUR (before taxes).

2. Two leading scientists to integrate the Bioinformatics and
Computational Biology Group. He/she will be expected to establish
solid collaborations, and be able to attract national and
international funding. As the candidate will be invited to
participate in teaching at the MSc and PhD levels, a history of
lecturing will be considered valuable. Salary will correspond
approximately to a grossannual income of 50.000 EUR (before taxes).

*Conservation Genetics in the Tropics*

A 30-months research position is available at CIBIO
(_http://cibio.up.pt_), University of Porto, Portugal, in the area of
conservation genetics in tropical regions. The candidate should have a
solid research background in the interface between population
genetics/genomics and conservation biology, as well as experience in
dealing with endangered species. The candidate should master molecular
biology techniques including genotyping and sequencing using both Sanger
and NGS procedures.

It is appreciated if he/she already started to build a worldwide network
of collaborators for future research in conservation genetics focusing
on tropical regions, and a special emphasis will be given to projects to
be developed in Brasil. The candidate should have a PhD in biology
(zoology, animal sciences or related fields), a minimum of 3 years as
Post-doc and a Curriculum vitae proving solid knowledge in conservation
genetics. The candidate should additionally have a significant
publication record in SCI journals for the above-mentioned topics and
supervised or co-supervised academic theses (both MSc and PhD theses).
Experience in teaching in this field will also be considered valuable.

*Behavioural Ecology*

A research position, renewed each year,is available at CIBIO

Ecology Group. The candidate should have a solid research background in
animal behavioural ecology, with autonomous research and publishing
experience in the area. The main research areas developed in the
behavioural ecology group are related to sexual selection and evolution
of signals in birds, and fish, cooperative breeding in birds, sexual
selection in islands, and functional aspects of animal personality. The
candidate is expected to integrate within these research areas and be
capable of developing positive interactions with the resident
researchers of the Behavioural Ecology group. The candidate should have

**Human Evolutionary Genetics**

We are now advertising a research position, renewed each year,in the
area of human evolutionary genetics. The group interests cover different
research topics related to the evolutionary history of human genes and
populations, using genome-wide sequencing and SNP data. A strong focus
will be devoted to the demographic history of African populations, in
particular to southern Angolan groups that are pivotal to understand the
peopling of southern Africa. A particular emphasis will be given to the
analysis of spatial patterns of genetic variation. As an additional
topic, the work on southern Angola will include the analysis of the
genetic diversity of cattle and sheep breeds held by peoples relying on
farming and herding to different extends. The candidate is expected to
have an interdisciplinary attitude, more oriented towards research
topics and data analysis than to lab techniques and data generation.
Accordingly, he/she is expected to have a sound knowledge of population
genetics theory and master different kinds of data analysis software
currently available to interpret human population genetic data.
Additional computer programing skills will be considered an advantage.

*Microbial Diversity and Evolution

**

A research position, renewed each year,is available at CIBIO

Diversity and Evolution group, which aim to foster basic and applied
research focused on microbial diversity and evolution. The groups'
medium-term challenges lying ahead are: i) to develop
culture-independent methods to detect/identify and genotyping bacteria
directly from environmental samples, ii) to conciliate in a single
procedure the specificity of genomic markers used in DNA-based detection
assays with the clonal resolution of genotyping throughMulti Locus
Sequence Typing (MLST) and Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNP) of
highly discriminatory taxa-specific markers, iii) to continue the
research on the inclusion of phylogenetic data into the selection
workflow of taxa-specific markers; this information should assist in the
selection of the most promising diagnostics markers, i.e. the ones that
correspond to a conserved genomic region within a particular taxa but
also reveal a larger distance to the most closely related sequences in
other taxa, iv)to perform genome data mining of niche-specific bacterial
communities using comparative genomics tools and phylogenetic analysis
to infer genomic footprints of bacterial ecotypes. Candidates should
have a PhD in biology, preferably a minimum of 3 years as Post-doc and a

*Research Manager at CIBIO

**

CIBIO, University of Porto, Portugal, is seeking to hire a Research
Manager**whose main job function will be to connect the research
activities at the Research Unit with the industry in applicable areas.
To be considered for the position, applicants must have a PhD in Natural
Sciences, Life Sciences or a related discipline, as well as Postdoctoral
experience in relevant areas. Company investigation experience, and/or
company management experience as well as knowledge in working in the
interface between companies and academia is essential. The applicant
should furthermore have good skills in R & D, HR and Operational
laboratory management. Experience in scientific and financial project
management, knowledge regarding the mechanisms in applying for financial
support from both Portuguese and EU grant organizations and in
coordinating acquired grants is a clear asset. Proficiency in/both

*Conservation Genetics in Tropical Regions

Two 30-months postdoctoral positions are available at
CIBIO(http://cibio.up.pt), University of Porto, Portugal, in the area of
conservation genetics in tropical regions, one focusing on plants, the
other on animals. Candidates should have a solid research background in
the interface between population genetics/genomics, phylogeography and
conservation biology, as well as experience if field trips. They should
master molecular biology techniques including genotyping and sequencing
using both Sanger and Next Generation Sequencing procedures. It is
appreciated if he/she already started to build a worldwide network of
collaborators for future research in conservation genetics focusing on
tropical regions, and a special emphasis will be given to projects to be
developed in Central and South America and Africa. The candidate should
have a PhD in biology, preferably a minimum of 3 years as Post-doc and a
Curriculum vitae proving solid knowledge in conservation genetics. The
candidate should additionally have a significant publication record in
SCI journals in the above-mentioned topics and supervised or
co-supervised academic theses (both MSc and PhD). The candidate should
be a good communicator, and speak and write fluent English. The ranking
of candidates will result from a global appreciation of the Curriculum
vitae, possibly followed by a job interview. The grant will correspond
to 1450 EUR per month (12 months).
